Mötley Crüe seemed like they were aways destined for stardom. They decided on the name Mötley Crüe after Mars heard someone refer to them as a “motley looking crew.” The umlauts were inspired by the German beer Löwenbräu. The band spent their early years performing on the garage circuit and played their first gig at Starwood nightclub on April 24th. The band formed in January 1981, with Nikki Six leaving a band called London to join the Crüe. The band grew to sell-out stadiums, but in the early days it was their DIY energy and androgynous looks that captured the attention of the American public. Material was recorded in the studio,most of which was recorded after the departure of Razzle,who set off to seek his fortune in London.They did record one song with Razzle called "Holy War"at a small 4-track studio in East Cowes.It was engineered by Tim Muncaster.The line-up for this recording session was:Shaun Newnham (Vocals),Phillip Oswald AKA SG Coolbridge (Guitar),Nigel Higgs (Bass),Razzle (Drums).All the material remains unreleased. Live,their set mainly consisted of cover versions of current Punk songs: It was during this time that Nick Dingley got his nickname of Razzle,given to him by John Edwardes the singer from Pump House Gang.He mentioned to Nick that he was always "Out on the Razzle". The bands biggest gig was supporting 'The Damned' at the Puckpool Leisure Centre in Ryde in April '79. The final line-up featured Shaun Newnham on vocals,Matt Kellett (Guitar),who would go on to play with Johnny Thunders and also play on the 'Fallen Angels' 2nd album "In Loving Memory" with Knox and Nasty Suicide,Mark Lewis on Bass and Damon Lewis on Drums. Thin Red Line played mostly cover songs with a few originals.The first line-up featured Shaun Newnham (vocals),Jimson on Guitar,Bob Piper (bass) and Razzle on drums.Philip Oswaid (AKA SG Coolbridge),who was also in 'Pumphouse Gang',replaced Jimson as guitarist.Local musician Loris Valvona stood in on bass for a couple of gigs at the "Prince Consort" in Ryde.
The Underdogs gigged around the island during 1978,their biggest gig supporting the Lurkers at Ryde Town Hall that summer. Thin Red Line were formed in Ryde,Isle of Wight in late 1978 out of the ashes of the band 'The Underdogs'
